Careful what you say to your potted plants

I was told by a source I know that they can listen to what you are saying in your house with a laser and high speed camera using your window as a speaker. Looks like my source wasn't making it up.

  1. Interesting in theory, but that demo was a controlled environment. I would like to see the results from an environment more like real life:
    - Muffled sound source
    - Multiple sound sources overlaid
    - Partial blockage of the visual source, as of people walking around

I think the technique would require a lot more work to actually be usable in the real world.

  2. Good catch. Yeah that would need to be tested for practical use. But the window laser thing my friend was telling me about would probably work with the uniformity of a pane of glass. But it would probably need to be in a relatively quiet neighborhood in good weather.

Yep, but it would still be rendered useless by a good white noise generator.

Even without that, it would also have to be capable of filtering out internal ambient vibrations such as those created by an air conditioner, or forced air furnace, or noisy appliances (washer/dryer/refrigerator) that are close proximity to the monitored window so as to transfer vibrations through the building structure and into the casing.

There ya go...there's your countermeasure -- just whip up a smoothie in the ol' blender whenever you don't want your conversations monitored. It's a poor man's white noise generator.
